KH. Bisri Syansuri is a cleric who was instrumental in establishing Nadlatul Ulama, and is also the founder and administrator of the Mamba'ul Ma'arif Denanyar Islamic Boarding School, Jombang. KH. Bisri Syansuri was born in Tayu Village, Pati Regency, Central Java Province, on 28 Dzulhijjah 1304 H/18 September 1886. He was the third child of the couple KH. Syansuri with Nyai Mariah.
1.2 Family History
While in Mecca, KH. Bisri Syansuri married KH. Abdul Wahab Hasbullah's younger sister. After returning from Mecca, he stayed at his in-laws' Islamic boarding school in Tambak Beras, Jombang, for two years.
KH. Bisri Syansuri married Nyai Hj. Chodidjah and in the same year, the two husband and wife returned to their homeland (1914). From this marriage KH. Bisri Syansuri was blessed with nine sons and daughters, including:

KH. Bisri Syansuri died at the age of 93 years, precisely on April 25 1980. He was buried in the Denanyar Islamic Boarding School complex (PP. Mamba'ul Ma'arif Denanyar, Jombang).

As a child, KH. Bisri Syansuri studied under KH. Abdussalam, an expert and memorizer of the Qur'an, who was also an expert in the field of fiqh. Under his guidance, he learned nahwu (syntax), saraf (morphology), fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), tasawwuf (Sufism), tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis), and hadith (Prophetic traditions). His teacher was known as a figure who was disciplined in adhering to religious rules. This characteristic became one of the defining traits of Kyai Bisri in later life.
Around the age of 15, Kyai Bisri Syansuri began studying religious knowledge with two renowned religious figures of that time, KH. Kholil Kasingan Rembang and KH. Syu’aib Sarang Lasem. He then continued his studies under Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan. It was at this pesantren that he later met KH. Abdul Wahab Hasbullah, who would become his close friend.
After studying under Syaikhona Kholil, Kyai Bisri Syansuri then studied under Hadratussyaikh KH. Hasyim Asy’ari in Tebuireng. He studied at the pesantren for six years. He received authorization (ijazah) from his teacher to teach well-known religious books from classical literature, ranging from the fiqh book Al-Zubad to hadith books such as Bukhari and Muslim.
From 1912 to 1913, Kyai Bisri Syansuri continued his education in Mecca along with KH. Abdul Wahab Hasbullah.
