1. Life History and Family

1.1 Birth
KH. Ali Maksum was born on March 2, 1915, in the village of Soditan, Lasem District, Rembang Regency. He was the first son of KH. Ma’shum bin KH. Ahmad Abdul Karim and Nyai Hj. Nuriyah binti KH. Muhammad Zein Lasem.

The family of KH. Ali Maksum, from the time of his grandfathers until now, has always been deeply rooted in pesantren (Islamic boarding school) values. His father, KH. Ali Maksum, who was famously known as Mbah Ma’shum, was the founder and caretaker of the Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School in the village of Soditan, Lasem, Rembang.

1.2 Family History
In 1938, KH. Ali Maksum married Nyai R. Hasyimah, the daughter of KH. M. Munawwir. A few days after their wedding, a man named H. Junaid from Kauman, Yogyakarta, through KH. Maksum, offered a free ticket to KH. Ali Maksum for the pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj). From their marriage, they were blessed with eight children:

1.3 Passing Away
When the 28th NU Congress was held at the Al-Munawwir Krapyak Islamic Boarding School, KH. Ali Maksum had already been ill for some time. Despite his illness, as the host responsible for the success of the congress, he still managed to lead the organizing committee, most of whom were his students, using a microphone from his room.

When President Soeharto, along with several ministers and kyais participating in the Congress, visited him, KH. Ali Maksum still managed to receive them while lying in his bed.

As a result, the Congress was successfully held, leading to the re-election of KH. Ahmad Shiddiq as Rais 'Aam and KH. Abdurahman Wahid (Gus Dur) as the Chairman of PBNU for the second term.

A week after the Congress, KH. Ali Maksum fell ill and was treated at DR. Sardjito Hospital for a week. He passed away as the Maghrib call to prayer was being recited at 5:55 PM on Thursday, December 7, 1989, or 15 Jumadil Awal 1410, at the age of 74.

His body was farewelled from the Krapyak Pesantren Mosque after the Friday prayers and was buried next to the grave of KH. M. Munawwir in the village of Senggotan (Dongkelan), Tirtonirmolo, Kasihan, Bantul, Yogyakarta.
