Birth
KH. Hasan Basri, commonly known as H. Hasan Gipo, was born in Kampung Sawahan in 1869, specifically on Ampel Masjid Street, which is now called Kalimas Udik Street. He came from a prominent family known as the “Gipo Clan,” hence the name Gipo was added after Hasan. The name “Gipo” itself is actually an abbreviation of Sagipodin, derived from the Arabic Saqifuddin: Saqaf (protector) and al-dien (religion).

When tracing his family lineage, H. Hasan Gipo is found to be related to KH. Mas Mansur of Muhammadiyah, as KH. Mas Mansur was a descendant of Abdul Latief Gipo, a member of the Gipo clan. From this information, it can be inferred that the descendants of Sagipodin have deep-rooted ties to both Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah.

Through genealogical tracing, it is found that he was the fifth generation of the Gipo dynasty. His father was H. Marzuki, his grandfather H. Alwi, and his great-grandfather H. Turmudzi, who married Darsiyah. His great-great-grandfather, Abdul Latief Sagipuddin, was the founder of the Gipo dynasty. He married Tasirah and had twelve children. From this lineage emerged Hasan Basri of Ampel, based in the city of Surabaya, more familiarly known as H. Hasan Gipo.

Born into a well-off family, he was fortunate to receive a Dutch-style education without neglecting traditional Islamic boarding school education. The spirit of santri (Islamic students) coursed deeply through his veins. His family's influence in the Pabean business area continued through his leadership, a legacy of the Gipo dynasty.

Death
H. Hasan Gipo passed away in 1934. His body was buried in the Sunan Ampel cemetery complex, in a special section reserved for the Sagipoddin family.

For a time, the historical record of KH. Hasan Gipo faded from NU’s collective memory. Various causes may have contributed to this, but the narrative has now been restored. In August 2015, the Chairman of the East Java Sagipodin Descendants Association (IKSA), H. Wachid Zein, and his team discovered KH. Hasan Gipo’s grave after extensive efforts, including tracing his descendants in Gresik.

Among his descendants, several important documents were also discovered, including a small 3x4 cm photo attached to the Dutch East Indies Government’s official recognition document, formerly known as the 1926 HBNO Statutes. The document included his official title: Chairman of Tanfidziyah.

Role in Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)
The appointment of H. Hasan Gipo as NU’s first Chairman of Tanfidziyah was a special decision, just like the founding of NU itself. H. Hasan Gipo was a rare figure: he had received a modern education in the Netherlands, yet remained deeply rooted in Islamic traditions. He was also known as the only member of KH. Wahab Hasbullah’s circle proficient in reading and writing Latin script. He maintained close ties with the surrounding community.

His election as Chairman of Tanfidziyah began with a small meeting to form NU’s leadership, involving only a few key figures from areas such as Ampel, Kawatan, Bubutan, and surrounding districts—all from Surabaya. In this meeting, the name H. Hasan Gipo was mentioned as the first Chairman of Tanfidziyah.
