1.1 Birth
Prof. Dr. KH. Ali Yafie was born in Donggala, Central Sulawesi, on September 1, 1926, or 23 Safar 1345. At that time, the first NU Congress was being held. He was the third of five siblings, namely:

1. Kyai As’ad
2. Nyai Muzainah
3. KH. Ali Yafie
4. Nyai Manarussana
5. Nyai Amira

His father was Sheikh Muhammad Al-Yafie, and his mother was Imacayya, the daughter of a king from one of the kingdoms in Tanete on the western coast of South Sulawesi. According to Gus Helmi Ali, the son of Kyai Ali Yafie, Bu Imacayya passed away when Kyai Ali Yafie was 10 years old. His father later remarried to Tanawali, and they had four children:

3. Nyai Khadijah
4. Kyai Idris

Sheikh Muhammad Al-Yafie passed away in the early 1950s.

At the age of 19, Prof. Dr. KH. Ali Yafie married Hj. Aisyah, who was 16 years old at the time. Despite marrying at a young age, they led a happy and harmonious married life. From this marriage, they were blessed with four children who would later carry on his legacy:

Prof. Dr. KH. Ali Yafie passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 10:13 PM at RS Premier Bintaro. Kyai Ali passed away at the age of 96 after undergoing intensive care at the hospital for approximately one month. He was laid to rest on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at Tanah Kusir Public Cemetery, South Jakarta.

2.1 Education
Prof. Dr. KH. Ali Yafie came from a devoutly religious family. From a young age, he was immersed in the world of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). His father, Sheikh Muhammad Yafie, was an educator who ensured that Kyai Ali received a strong foundation in religious studies from an early age by enrolling him in a pesantren.

He received his early education at a public elementary school, which was followed by studies at the renowned Madrasah Asadiyah in Sengkang, South Sulawesi. His father continually encouraged him to seek out as much knowledge as possible, particularly religious knowledge from esteemed scholars, including the prominent scholar Sheikh Muhammad Firdaus from Hijaz, Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The emphasis on the pursuit of knowledge instilled by his parents remained with him throughout his life, a commitment he later passed on to his own children and students at the Darud Dakwah Al-Irsyad Islamic Boarding School.
