Muhammad Mahfudz bin Abdullah bin Abdul Manan bin Dipomenggolo at Tarmasi al Jawi or who is often called Sheikh Mahfudz at-Tarmasi was born on 12 Jummadil Ulla (25 Rojab) in 1258 which coincided with August 31, 1842 AD, in Tremas Village, Arjosari District, Regency, Pacitan, East Java (at that time Tremas village was still part of Karasidenan area, Solo, Central Java).
When Sheikh Mahfudz at-Tarmasi was born KH. Abdullah (his father) was in Mecca, he was the eldest son of KH. Abdullah, and lived in Mecca until he died on 1 Rajab 1338 H / 20 May 1920 AD.

Sheikh Mahfudz at-Tarmasi started his education by studying directly with his father, KH. Abdullah. He studied the Qur'an, Fathul Mu'in, Fathul Wahhab, Syarah As-Syarqowiyah Al-Hikam and the interpretation of Al-Jalalin up to the letter Yunus only.
After studying with his father, he continued his education by studying at a boarding school in Semarang, Central Java, which was taken care of by KH. Muhammad Sholeh bin Umar (Mbah Sholeh Darat). In Semarang, he studied Syarah Hikam (twice completed), Tafsir Jalalain (twice completed), Syarah Al-Mardini and Wasilah Ath-Thullab, this last book on astronomy and was ditashih and confirmed by Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fathani.
After that, he moved to Makkah Al-Mukaramah to continue his education. In Arabia he studied with Sheikh Ahmad Al-Minsyawi known as Muqri, he studied the Qiro'ah of Imam Ashim and Tajweed, some of the syarah of Ibni Al-Qashih 'Ala Asy-Syatibiyyah (no time to finish).
